Pleased tell me you went out and saw Mortal Engine? If you did then you would one of the few who did. Mortal Engine has already officially became a bomb just in its opening week and honestly who is really surprised? I know I didn’t see it and when I first saw the trailer, I knew I couldn’t take the movie seriously, all i saw was a big city on wheels with a revenge plot, nothing that truly excited me or even sounded like a good movie. After I did my research I found out that it was a book way back in 2001, and that is part of the problem.
We all understand that Hollywood is running out of its own ideas so they are diving into the books, in some cases it proves to be a good move but in other and more cases it is not a good idea because what people love in a book they won’t pay to go see it and this is one reason why the movie failed. The next reason is that the book came out in 2001 and I am sure it was good book and what not but the fan base clearly moved on and or just forgot about it. I would expect better from Peter Jackson but I guess not. Next reason was the fact it was going up against The Mule and Spider-Man. Each movie had their own fanbase that took viewers away from Mortal Engine. Then Lastly was the reviews, this movie was already doomed before the critics watched it and all they did was bury it, the best reviews came mostly from the visual effects and that was it.
The movie could end up taking a loss of 50 to 100 million. The budget was anywhere between 100=150 million dollars. It’s opening domestic box office performance was 7.5 million and worldwide currently sits at 43 million. Insiders predidcted a flop and thought it would gross between 10-13 million and it failed to even that. It currently sitting in fifth place and I doubt that it will stay there because BumbleBee and AquaMan are opening this up coming weekend.
Look I don’t think when people are picking idea from books, they need to be a little smarter with what ideas they pick and put a big budget film together. The idea needs to be thought carefully but i am sure no one will listen and just go with what they think will work. Well in this case it did not.
