Sequel Saturday presents Creed 2

By Paul Anthony

Last week I reviewed Rocky 2 and I gave it high remarks and I don’t think anyone would disagree with me. As we know the Rocky franchise began to shift away from Rocky the Boxer to Rocker the trainer storylines where Rocky is now a supporting character rather then the main character, there the series brings in Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed whos is the son of Rocky’s former rival turn friend Apollo Creed. Now I must have to admit I never saw the first Creed film and I am disappointed in myself but I am sure I will see it sooner or later. In some ways Creed 2 storyline followed Rocky 2 where the boxer now has to deal with fame this time Adonis didn’t retire and lose money no he became the champ and lived a pretty good life. Now the film received pretty good reviews and made a good profit. The film was made from a 50 million dollar budget and grossed 214 million, which was a increase from the first film which grossed 173 million dollars so a modest increase.

Now the film takes place 3 years after the events of the first film, Donnie since that lost is now on a 6 match winning streak gets a shot at the title and wins the title. Life is going good until Rocky’s old enemy who killed Apollo Creed, Ivan Drago trains his son to become even a bigger machine then he was, Viktor Drago starts to win fights and thanks to a snake of a boxing promoter they bait Creed into a fight with Viktor. Ivan meets up with Rocky and reveals he lost everything including his wife because of the fight he lost to Rocky. Creed agrees to the fight but Rocky doesn’t want him to do and soon they part ways. Creed proposes to his girlfriend Bianca, life gets even better when he learns Bianca is expecting their first child, Creed begins to train without Rocky and then the fight takes place and Creed barely surviving the fight suffers from major injuries and it is clear that he is about to lose however because of a dirty hit Viktor gets disqualified, Creed remains the champion but has a long road to recovery. Viktor realizes that Ivan wanted this fight for himself to get the fame he once had in the end Viktor doesn’t care about the people who left them behind but still wants the title and they begin to campaign for a rematch. Creed in the mean time battle his inner demons and even reconnects with Rocky who once again trains him for the fight, the fight takes place in Russia and at first Viktor gets the upper hand but Creed continues to fight back and wears him down and soon Ivan sees his son is now on the losing end of the fight throws in the towel and tells him its okay. The movie preaches the importance of family. Donnie brings his newborn daughter to his father’s grave and Rocky reconnects with his son and meets his grandson, life moves on.

This move had great acting to it and I loved the character development it made me feel the pain the characters emotions and how they are dealing with what comes their way, this is my favorite part of the whole film and with everything on the wall I have to give it and A or a 93 percent. Creed 3 might not happen instead Rocky might be training a new boxer which could set up a cameo of sorts, we shall see what the next film will be!

Sequel Saturday Presents Rocky 2

By Paul Anthony

This time last year the movie called Creed two was reigning supreme at the box office. Now we know Creed is a spinoff of the Rocky film series, so with that being said it is only natural we take a look at first sequel that started it all and that is Rocky 2.  Rocky 2 came out three years after Rocky part one and is a direct sequel picking up pretty much after his fight with Apollo Creed ended and they were heading to the hospital. Rocky part 1 proved to be a big hit with a budget of 1 million and grossed 225 million dollars which in 1976 was a great deal of money, even better when you say the budget was only 1 million. In This film they got the entire cast to return and the budget was bigger at 7 million and the film though grossed less then the first still grossed 200 million, not bad all and even though it didn’t make as much money, many people still considered it a great follow up.

Like I said before the movie starts right after the match with Creed and Rocky who then announces that he is retiring and moving with his life. Which he does, he gets married and buys a new home and car and brings in some money through commercials but then that doesn’t end well and the money stops coming in. Meanwhile Apollo Creed isn’t doing much better despite being the champion and making the cash, he starts to be criticize for the split decision because it means he was awarded the win because he was the champion. Still despite them agreeing to a no rematch, Creed begins to smear Rocky’s name to get him out of retirement and at first Rocky blows it off like it is no big deal but then times begin to get hard for Rocky, who loses his job at the Meat Market, which forces Adrian to return to the pet shop for money. Rocky unable to get a job realizes he is a fighter and nothing else but he has to convince his wife to let him return and so he does agreeing to fight Apollo Creed for the title once again. This time he needs to train to protect him and his injured eye which means he needs to lead with his right hand instead of his left. So the fight begins pretty much like their first with Rocky taking the bulk of the beating until the end when Rocky goes back to being lefthanded and gets the upper hand and in the final moments he knockouts Creed for the title and he yells to Adrian whos is watching from home “I did it” and she returns by saying yes you did and the film ends.

Now For a sequel I am giving this film a very high praise and the film never skipped a beat and the story made sense. it gave us a good follow up story because we knew the story couldn’t have ended the way it did. I am giving this film a A plus or right around 95 percent, it was very hard to point out anything that I didn’t like maybe a second or two but that is about it. Even If you don’t sport’s films I would say this is a must see film.
